DESCRIPTION

Design, develop and/or test various pressure sensitive label material constructions and perform chemical, physical and mechanical testing as needed. Work with Suppliers to identify new material constructions and identify fundamental manufacturing processes. Design test methods and protocols. Collect and interpret experimental data to ensure reliable and world-class product delivery.

Responsibilities:
Work is typically performed under minimal daily supervision, receiving guidance from manager/supervisor about the work that needs to be completed. Able to exercise high level of discretion and latitude in completing tasks.

* Conducts testing of all new materials, inks, and/or processes for internal use or in response to Customer needs. Testing includes, but is not limited to, gasoline, water, oil, temperature cycling, accelerated outdoor weathering, etc.
* Knowledgeable of chemicals and ability to work safely with them in a laboratory/manufacturing environment.
* Sets timetables and milestones for assigned project tasks. Provides management with progress reports while maintaining impeccable daily records of all research, testing and customer visits.
* Constructs and applies appropriate acceptance criteria for materials and/or processes.
* May direct responsibility for project creation, timeline and management of project capital/expense.
* Works closely and cross-functionally with other engineers, scientists, technicians, Quality Manager, Customers and manufacturing personnel to produce end product.
* Uses best practices and knowledge of internal or external business requirements to improve products or services
* Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective using existing solutions.
* Performs work that is substantially varied and complex, which requires in-depth analysis.
* Regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment involving complex tasks. Works under minimal supervision.
* Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience; may direct the work of other staff members in a mentoring capacity.
* Responsible for maintaining laboratory safety and maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus.
* Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned, including, but not limited to, Environmental and Safety project assignments.

REQUIRED SKILLS

1) Bachelor degree in chemistry or discipline related to functional work or role with 3-5 years of relevant work experience OR demonstrated ability to meet the job requirements through a comparable number of years of applicable work experience.

2) Able to demonstrate ability to solve somewhat more complex problems by analyzing variables and applying appropriate solutions learned through experience and proficiency in understanding the job. Must be able to recognize anomalies and critical situations and respond appropriately.

3) Must be able to communicate and interact with a variety of internal/external customers and/or co-workers at level of detail required to resolve issues of moderate complexity.

4) Able to apply strong functional computer knowledge in utilizing Microsoft Windows, or other technical tools in completing assignments. May require knowledge of or ability to quickly learn specialized software to complete work assignments.

5) Able to demonstrate continued expertise in the primary tools or applications used in completing daily work assignments.

6) Requires very good communication skills with ability to state messages in a clear manner by using language that is easy for others to understand.

7) Must be able to proactively listen to others to understand issues and situations.

8) Must be able to clearly articulate business needs to both internal and external customers.

9) Experience in Designed Experimental (DOE) procedures and methods preferred

10) Knowledge and experience in print industry, preferably flexo or screen.

11) Knowledge of pressure sensitive label adhesives preferred.
